ADULT PASSPORT – PC8 (not able to use simplified renewal form)

ADULT PASSPORT – PC8 (not able to use simplified renewal form)

Step 1- Check your eligibility for an adult passport.

Adults who are applying for an Australian passport should use the Overseas Passport Application Form if:

  • you are applying for a first ever Australian passport OR
  • you are applying for a first adult passport when your child passport was issued to you at 15 years or younger OR
  • you are replacing a passport reported lost or stolen OR
  • you are applying for your first passport after resumption of citizenship OR
  • you are applying to replace a limited validity passport, emergency passport, or other temporary travel document.

Step 2 - Fill out your application form (Australian Passport Overseas Application).

You should complete the application form online at the following website - https://online.passports.gov.au/.  This link will also allow you to confirm that you are eligible to renew your adult passport. You'll need to create an AusPassport account to start your passport application online.

If you have problems creating an AusPassport account, or completing the online form, please call +603 2146 5575 or email [email protected].

Sign and date the form using black pen, within the signature box. Application forms with signatures that go beyond the white box / signature box will not be accepted. Make sure there are no alterations or whiteout on the signature and/or the date. If you make a mistake, you can cross it out and initial next to the change.  If you have signed incorrectly, please fill in a new form.

Step 3- Make an appointment to lodge your passport application.

The Passport Office operates an appointment system and we will not see you without an appointment.

Step 4 - Prove your Australian Citizenship

You must provide either an original Australian Citizenship Certificate or an original full Australian Birth Certificate to prove Australian citizenship. Extracts, commemorative birth certificate or birth cards cannot be used.

Unless you qualify for renewal, you have to show us documents that prove you’re an Australian citizen. Due to the changes to Australian citizenship laws on 20 August 1986, the documents we require depend on whether you were:

  • born overseas, or
  • born in Australia before 20 August 1986, or
  • born in Australia on or after 20 August 1986.

Please click here for more information on the above.

Step 5 - Take two passport photos.

It is important that you refer to the photo guidelines for more information and for presentation to the photo studio for acceptable photos.

Please clearly print your full name on the back of one photo. Your photographs do not need to be endorsed by someone else.

Passport photos taken in Malaysian photography shops are often digitally altered and do not meet the Australian passport photograph guidelines. We recommend that you obtain a soft copy of your photos and email to [email protected], as we may need to reprint your photo if the copy printed by shop is digitally altered.

Your Guarantor (see Step 6) must endorse one photo in black pen as follows: “This is a true photo of [the applicant’s full name]”, and then sign it below.  Do not use paper clips or staples to attach photos to the form as this may damage them.

Step 6 – Guarantor

As well as endorsing your photo, ensure Section 11 is completed by a guarantor who meets the following criteria:

  • is 18 years of age or over
  • has known the applicant for at least 12 months
  • is not related to the applicant by birth, marriage, de facto or same sex relationship, or live at the applicant's address (please do not use your helper to as a guarantor, as they will be ineligible as they live with you at your address)
  • holds a current (unexpired) Australian passport that was issued with at least two years validity OR be currently employed in the following approved professional or occupational group.
  • Accountants who are members of either the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, Australian Society of Certified Practicing Accountants, National Institute of Accountants or Association of Taxation and Management Accountants. Specify which membership status applies.
