The Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur invites applications for the position of Media Relations Officer in the Public Diplomacy and Policy Support (PDPS) Section for a start date as soon as possible.
The successful applicant will be responsible for media monitoring, analysis and liaison for the High Commission, and developing strategies for and implementing the High Commission’s publicity program. The position is also responsible for the High Commission’s social media platforms and taking forward its digital media strategy.
The work can be demanding and requires the successful applicant to be well-organised and motivated.
The successful applicant will be required to deal extensively with the local media and Australian officials, so good communication skills are essential. The successful applicant will demonstrate adaptability and flexibility in the work they undertake, which will also include assisting the High Commission’s Political and Economic Section and other teams as required.
The terms of employment will be in accordance with the Kuala Lumpur Based Terms and Conditions of Employment. Employment will be offered on on-going basis at a level 4 Locally Engaged Staff position (LE4) with an annual salary in the range of RM69,144 to RM74,844. Continued employment is subject to successful completion of a 6-month probation period.

Job Description
The position is a Locally Engaged Staff position within the High Commission. The Media Relations Officer is responsible for media monitoring, analysis and liaison, and developing and implementing media strategies, including for digital media, to promote the High Commission’s objectives. As part of a team, the position is responsible for identifying, developing and implementing publicity programs for the High Commission.
Tasks and Functions
- Identify, develop, oversee and implement publicity programs for the High Commission in support of Australia-Malaysia bilateral relations, including securing media coverage of high-profile events
- Monitor, analyse and report on news in the Malaysian media regularly, including news that may affect Australia’s interests. Provide advice and assessment to High Commission staff on issues of interest, media trends and media organisations
- Contribute to media aspects of events, visit and exchange programs, including high-level/ministerial visits
- Produce and update content for High Commission's social media platforms and website, analyse usage and develop strategies to maximise impact
- Compile and distribute daily media summary and assess media for specific issues
- Manage media/communication-related contracts and agreements with partners as required
- Respond to public enquiries and information requests via telephone, online and e-mails to the High Commission, including directing phone enquiries to relevant staff. Monitor and respond to public enquiries and feedback on social media platforms.
Selection Criteria
- A tertiary degree and work experience in media and/or public relations activities
- Demonstrated ability to manage and maximise publicity for events and major visits
- Sound knowledge of the social media landscape in Malaysia and experience in using major platforms such as Facebook and Twitter to achieve objectives
- Well-developed research and analytical skills, and well-developed computer skills
- Knowledge about Malaysia's politics, economy and society
- Well-developed ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing in English and Bahasa Malaysia
